How to Dye Your Interior
My red interior had faded to purple and I have re-painted several of the plastic interior panels with great results using a vinyl and plastic paint. A great brand that I have used is SEM available at Eastwood. It is best to use an enamel paint on the metal surfaces, although the vinyl and plastic paint will cover metal also.
Here are a few steps on how to do this.
- Be sure to start with a clean panel. Wash it down good with soap and water.
- Allow it to dry.
- Clean again with a plastic prep or just wash down with alcohol.
- Mask off any areas that do not need to be painted.
- Use vinyl and plastic paint spray can 6" to 8" away from object "mist" a coat with paint. For best results use with temperature between 70 and 80 degrees F.
- Allow to dry 5 to 10 minutes between coats.
It is easy to paint with this type of paint just use thin coats to avoid running. I have not had to use any primer for this type paint even when changing colors (I had one seatback that was replaced with a dark blue and died to red with no problems). There are however primers available to do this with if you choose.
There are several brands to choose from. The one I have used was SEM in a spray can. It runs around $7.00 to $8.00 a can. This has worked well with my vinyl back seat with no pealing or adverse affects.
